What should young people focus on the most?
(A) Family and Societal Responsibilities
(B) Health, Discipline and Character
(C) Career and Financial Independence
(A) Family and Societal Responsibilities:
1. All of us will agree that family provides emotional support and stability. Even the World Health Organization recognises supportive family and social environments as important protective factors for adolescent mental health. Therefore, family relationships deserve attention because emotional stability helps youth face challenges and keep moving ahead in life. For example, a student who fails an important competitive examination may feel discouraged. Supportive parents can help him review his preparation, consider alternatives, and regain confidence.
2. We are aware that India's Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, provides for maintenance of eligible parents and senior citizens by children and relatives. Additionally, taking responsibility at home teaches young people to think beyond their personal needs. Therefore, sharing household duties, supporting younger siblings, and helping elderly family members develop cooperation, patience, and a sense of duty. These qualities are also useful in professional life and leadership. For example, a college student who helps his younger sister with studies and accompanies his grandparents to medical appointments learns time management, empathy, and responsibility.
3. We are incredibly fortunate that our military careers naturally double as a form of community service. But building a better society isn’t just a job for the military—it requires the energy of today’s youth. Ultimately, a community is only as strong as its citizens. It is a well-known truth that government agencies simply cannot fix every local issue without our help. By stepping up for things like cleanliness drives, green initiatives, tutoring, blood donation, and emergency response, young people can actively shape a better future. For example, during a flood, college students can assist authorised relief teams by organising essential supplies, distributing food, and helping affected families access assistance.
4. Individually, we can progress only when we live in a healthy environment and a better-functioning society. A society functions better when citizens respect laws, public property, other people's rights, and shared resources. Responsible behaviour also strengthens trust between people. It is for this reason that Article 51A of the Indian Constitution lists Fundamental Duties, including promoting harmony, protecting the environment, and safeguarding public property. When young people step up for their families and communities, everyone wins. They help build a stronger, united nation. Plus, they get to live a truly happy and successful life.
(B) Health, Discipline and Character:
1. In my opinion, Youth should give maximum importance to health because physical and mental well-being support education, employment, and family responsibilities. Good health improves concentration, attendance, energy, and productivity. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, and mental well-being help young people perform daily tasks effectively. For example, in my view, an NDA aspirant must focus on health, discipline, and character to succeed. It is the only way to clear the academic exams and meet the strict military fitness standards.
2. Today, youth face distractions from social media, entertainment, and competing activities. Discipline helps them manage time, maintain routines, and continue working towards long-term goals. For example, two students may attend the same NDA coaching classes. The student who regularly revises lessons, solves previous-year questions, and maintains physical fitness is better prepared than someone who studies irregularly.
3. Look, if you want a career in public service—like joining the military, healthcare, or the government—people have to trust you. Being honest is everything. Honestly, your skills only matter if you actually use them responsibly. Good grades and qualifications might get your foot in the door, but it's your character and hard work that actually land you the job. If you cheat or lie, you ruin your reputation, your relationships, and your entire future.
4. We will all agree that mental strength helps youth handle failures and pressure. Examinations, interviews, competitions, and careers involve uncertainty. Young people who can accept feedback, manage disappointment, and adapt their approach are better prepared to continue improving. For example, A candidate who is not recommended in his first SSB attempt can analyse his shortcomings, work on them, and prepare for another opportunity instead of giving up. Therefore, mental strength helps youth remain purposeful even when circumstances are difficult.
(C) Career and Financial Independence:
1. In my opinion, financial independence allows young adults to meet personal needs, make decisions, and assume responsibilities. It also gives them greater control over their future. For example, a young person who completes vocational training and secures employment can pay for accommodation, transport, and daily expenses without depending entirely on parents.
2. Different professions demand different combinations of education, practical skills, examinations, and training. A clear goal helps young people use their time more effectively. Therefore, youth should identify career goals early enough to prepare for the qualifications and skills required. For example, a student aspiring to become an Armed Forces officer can identify the appropriate NDA, CDS, or other entry route and plan academic, physical, and SSB preparation accordingly.
3. A stable income helps young people fulfil family responsibilities and contribute to household security. Emotional support is important, but families also face financial needs involving education, healthcare, housing, and emergencies. Earning members can help meet these needs. Therefore, career success can strengthen family welfare by giving youth the means to provide practical support.
4. Income and savings can help individuals pursue higher education, relocate for work, start businesses, or manage emergencies. Financial stability also reduces some forms of economic stress. For example, a young professional with sufficient savings may be able to undertake a specialised course or start a small enterprise without relying entirely on family funds. Therefore, financial independence provides resources that support personal growth, family welfare, and a step towards a developed India.
