SSB Interview Question by Kunal Singh Rathore: During the Interview, the Interviewing Officer says, “I am not going to recommend you. Impress me in one minute”. What should the candidate reply?

Answer by Cdr Rathore: This question can also be asked in several other ways. For example, “Tell me something about yourself.”   Or    “What motivated you to join Armed Forces?”

Basically, the interviewing officer will get to see:

  • Do you know what are the soft skills required to be an officer and do you have them?
  • Are you having correct insight (knowledge about correct level of your qualities)?
  • Several OLQ’s emerge. For instance, Reasoning ability, Effective Intelligence, Organising ability, Power of expression, Self Confidence, Initiative and Speed of Decision etc.

Let us come to the actual answer now: -

Sir, as an officer I will be required to learn about several armaments, tactics, navigation (map reading), rules and regulations etc. I am good at learning things. It took me just two months (time as per your exam) to prepare for CDSE (or any other exam) though I had to put about 10 to 12 hours a day in studies. Similarly, I am aware that the officers in the Armed Forces are very fit. I have been regular in playing sports and physical exercises. Thus, I will find no difficulty in the Officer’s training. In addition, during my SSB coaching, I use to prepare lectturete and group discussion topics well in advance in order to perform confidently in group activities. I also found that my mentor at the coaching praised me for my efforts and keen desire to learn and do well. If I can get words of praise from a retired officer, I know, I have the capabilities to become a good officer.

Note: I have deliberately not inserted education (proficiency & knowledge) because some of you might have been average in studies. Hence, if you have been a good student, highlight your credentials. Similarly, some of you might have been good sportsmen, highlight that you would be performing at much better level in the Armed Forces.
