SSB Interview Question by Rudra Pratap Naskar: In the PPDT test, during the individual narration of his story, if a candidate pauses or stops, does it create any negative impact on candidate’s selection?

Answer by Cdr Rathore: Let me first explain the conduct of the PPDT test in SSB before I answer the question. In the PPDT test, the candidates are shown a picture on which each candidate writes a story in four minutes. After that, the answer sheet (on which the story is written) is collected from the candidates and they are grouped in batches of 14-16 candidates each. Now each batch (with approx. 15 candidates) is taken in a hall where three selectors (GTO, Psychologist & the Interviewing officer) are present to assess the candidates. The candidates are made to sit chest-number wise in a semi-circle. Thereafter, one of the selectors explains how the individual narration & discussion will be conducted.

Individual narration & discussion on the picture: In this phase, each candidate narrates his story (in English) individually one by one in about a minute each.  The narration of story starts with the candidate telling the group about the number of characters, age, sex & mood of each character he saw in the picture and the title of the story. Thereafter, the candidate narrates his story. All this must be completed by the candidate in about one minute. Please listen to stories of other candidates so that you can refer to it during discussion. Once all the candidates finish their narration, they discuss amongst themselves to arrive at a common story on the picture shown.

Assessment of candidate during “Individual Narration”: If a candidate is unable to narrate his story fluently, he will be penalized in communication skills &/or Self-confidence (as the case may be). Such candidates are not selected.

  1. Language problem: In case a candidate is getting stuck because he is weak in Spoken English, he should continue narrating his story by switching over the language of narration (Hindi) but revert to English as soon as possible. Switchover is permitted in Hindi only. Hence, candidates who are weak in Spoken English should join spoken English classes in RS Defenceselect Academy.
  2. Self-confidence: Some candidates are unable to narrate their story because of lack of Self-confidence. Such candidates should practice speaking on a lecturette topic in front of mirror daily two to three times a day.

For better development of these skills, join my SSB classes in RS Defenceselect Academy.
